Set on 2.5 acres at the gateway to St Paul's Rock — one of New Zealand's best short hikes — this cedar-shingled barn overlooks Whangaroa Harbour in the Bay of Islands region, named in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2026.

Renovated late 2025: queen bed, 2 sofa beds, full kitchen, fireplace, high-speed WiFi, and a dedicated workspace.

Outside: BBQ, alfresco dining, native birdlife, and stargazing under some of New Zealand's darkest skies. Dogs welcome. Weekly and monthly rates available.

The space
Designed by engineers and crafted by boat builders, this 150m² barn is unlike anything else you'll stay in. The squared-off A-frame construction creates a soaring interior — cedar walls drawing the light up through skylights while waxed concrete keeps things cool underfoot in summer. In winter, the wood-burning fireplace heats the whole space.

The kitchen and dining area open straight onto the back patio, where Ota Point turns gold at sunset. When it’s warm, this is where you'll spend your evenings — wine in hand, harbour below, nobody else around.
Upstairs on the cozy, carpeted mezzanine: the queen bed with views in both directions, a lounge area with a second double sofa bed, and the workspace.

Downstairs: another double sofa bed, the living area with fireplace and a well-stocked bookcase, and a spacious bathroom with shower and washing machine — fully self-contained.

Outside, a trellis-enclosed area with a big picnic table is the spot for evening BBQs. There’s even a fish filleting table for you to prepare your catch. Flat lawns and a paddock below St Paul's Rock give kids (and dogs) room to run. Plenty of parking — even room for a boat if you're here for the fishing.

The wildlife is constant. Quail families and pheasants strut across the lawn. Tui and fantails work the garden. Woodpigeons sit in the trees. At night, the morepork calls and then — silence.

Walk 20 minutes to the summit of St Paul's Rock for 360-degree harbour views. Walk 15 minutes downhill to the Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club, where charters depart for marlin, tuna, and kingfish — this is the marlin capital of New Zealand and the harbour buzzes with fishing competitions every summer.

When you've had enough of the outdoors, there's a big screen with Netflix, and the Starlink WiFi is fast enough for streaming or video calls. But honestly, most guests find the serenity of the mezzanine is all the entertainment they need.
