Welcome to The Nest, a cosy off-grid clifftop coastal escape on Surf Highway 45 in Taranaki.

This dreamy, earthy retreat is made for switching off and reconnecting with nature. Soak in the outdoor bath under open skies while listening to the ocean. Perfect for couples or solo travellers seeking some time out from the busyness of life.

A sought-after stay for years, The Nest is now under new family management as a fresh Air BnB listing, but still the same magical escape.

The space
The Nest is a renovated off-grid bach on the west coast cliffs of South Taranaki, overlooking the Tasman Sea. This space was created to offer a break from the stresses of everyday life and a chance to reset in natural surroundings.

The Location
The Nest is located on Surf Highway 45 in South Taranaki, just a few minutes south of Ōpunake. It feels private and secluded, yet the main street, cafés, and everyday essentials are only a 5-minute drive away.

The Space
This building was originally the Waverley Women’s Bowling Clubrooms and was shifted to its current site a few decades ago as a family bach. In 2019, major renovations transformed it into what it is today.

Rest
Sink into the king bed, listen to the waves, and enjoy the comfort of premium bedding and linen. After a slow morning in bed, move to the couch and take in the view.

Dine
The kitchenette includes a mini fridge, gas burner, and large sink, powered by solar and natural gas. It’s a simple setup with the basics for cooking easy meals, with the sea as your backdrop.

Cleanse
Enjoy the outdoor bath and take in the night sky, or rinse off in the renovated bathroom with shower, toilet, and basin.

The Beach
From The Nest, you may witness all the faces of the Tasman Sea. Stroll along the one kilometre of coastline or dip a toe in; experienced swimmers may even want to venture out a little further.

Snuggle
The west coast of NZ is well known for its ruggedness, and the weather is sometimes no exception. We have a selection of art books, magazines, and board games to keep you entertained on cosy days by the couch.

Internet
The Nest is designed as a place to switch off, so there is no Wi-Fi or TV.

Work
We don’t encourage work here, this is a space to rest ; )

Is Suited To
The Nest is an open-plan studio and is best suited to two guests or fewer.

Local Creatives
As a creative myself, I love supporting other artists, so I’ve decorated The Nest with work from local creatives and producers. Enjoy.

Other Things to Note
There is no fence along the cliff side, so The Nest is not suitable for children or pets. Please stay on the deck when at the front of The Nest and be mindful of the edge.

If travelling from New Plymouth, it’s a good idea to fill up with fuel in Ōpunake, as options are limited further down the road.

Guest access
A vehicle is required to access The Nest via the family farm. Most cars make it through fine, though the track has a few bumps and winding sections. A 4WD isn’t necessary, but very low vehicles may not be suitable.

Guests have full access to The Nest and the area within the surrounding fence, as well as the private walking track to the beach. The track is on the river side of The Nest, simply follow the path where the grass is flattened all the way down.

Born in the 80s
Where I went to school: Pihama Primary School
Born and bred in Pihama, I’ve recently returned to rural Taranaki, NZ after more than 20 years living & travelling abroad. I have a love for adventure and was fortunate to work with bands & events, which allowed me to travel as part of my work. I’m an avid surfer with a strong connection to the arts, always drawn to creative projects, especially jewellery making. I’ve hosted & travelled extensively on Airbnb in Australia, & am now excited to begin hosting here (hence my clean profile).
