Other things to note
***IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING***

This is not a Hotel

The Ruataniwha Hut offers a deliberately simple and minimalistic experience, free from unnecessary distractions or conveniences. While it’s not indulgent, it is comfortable—providing everything you need to recharge after a day of adventure. You'll be coexisting with the wild, with bugs (including our native moth), critters, and unpredictable weather. No air conditioning, no fancy screens—just the raw outdoors!

If you prefer a standard hotel setup then you may want to seek more comfortable accommodation in Twizel or Tekapo.

But for those who are adventurous , crave mountain views, fireside relaxation, stargazing and a rural outlook this is your unique experience ! 🏔️✨🏠

Though the photos may suggest complete isolation, we do have neighbours—the nearest being a small farm approx 200 meters away, ensuring the hut remains private.

The Hut is located in Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve - -there is no street lighting , it is dark !

🔥🪵 WOOD BURNER:

The wood burner is the primary source of heat during winter so you'll need to feel comfortable with the task of operating it. It takes a little effort , patience and perseverance. You are advised to read the instructions before using it.

Guests will need to chop kindling to start the fire from pre cut logs found in the wood shed next to the hut. There is a "kindling cracker" provided which will aid in the chopping of the kindling.

🍃WIND:
Occasionally the wind can be very strong and gusty. It can be a bit intimidating particularly when it reaches speeds exceeding 100kmh but it's also part of the thrill of the high country !

❄️WINTER:
The hut is in a sub alpine location , occasionally weather events in the winter may briefly restrict travel in the region, including in Queenstown , Wanaka and Tekapo.
However most roads are well-maintained and remain accessible all year round. Snowfall is typically limited to mountain passes like the Crown Range , Lindis and Burkes Passes. Authorities generally clear these roads within 24 hours to minimise disruptions.

Guests are responsible for checking road and weather conditions before commencing travel.

☀️SUMMER:
There is no air conditioning in the hut and temperatures may rise during the summer afternoons. However, opening the doors, windows, and skylights will help cool the hut down. Guests can also take a refreshing dip in the glacier-fed waters of Lake Ohau which is a 5 min drive way.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

No Air conditioning

No Dishwasher or Microwave

No TV

BBQ: While it's not officially listed as an amenity, we do provide a BBQ on an "as is, where is" basis. We just ask that guests do their best to clean up after using it—so it might not be spotless, but it’s there for you to enjoy! 🍔

***PLEASE 🙏 - NO SMOKING OR VAPING*** - Do not flick cigarette butts into the landscape - this is a fire hazard at all times of the year.

***Please take care when climbing up and down the steep stairs to the loft***.

While children are welcome parents should be aware that there is no fire guard around the log burner.

Cot and highchair provided ( Please note we do not provide linen )

Drones / UAV - You can only fly your drone / UAV over our the hut , flying over other peoples land is prohibited by New Zealand Law.
